Dog Park Etiquette & Safety

What to check before unclipping the leash, when to use a small-dog area, what to bring, and which dogs are better off elsewhere.

Before you unclip the leash

Fencing records on maps can be incomplete or out of date, so treat them as a starting point rather than a guarantee. Walk the perimeter once, check that gates latch and that the entry has a double gate or airlock, and watch the group already inside before you commit. A park that is full of high-arousal play is not the place to introduce a nervous dog.

Entry designDouble gate / airlock preferred
Fence heightTypically 4–6 ft; taller for athletic breeds
Small-dog cutoffCommonly around 25–30 lb, varies by park
WaterBring your own if no water point is recorded
Busiest hoursWeekday evenings, weekend mornings

Reading the room

Healthy play is loose, bouncy, and takes turns, with frequent short pauses. Stiff posture, a hard stare, or one dog repeatedly pinning another are signals to interrupt and take a break. Keep moving rather than clustering by the gate, since crowding at the entrance is where most conflicts start.

Small-dog areas

Separate small-dog enclosures exist because size mismatches carry real injury risk, even in friendly play. If your dog is under roughly 25 pounds or is easily overwhelmed, use the small-dog side when one is available. Park pages in this directory mark a separate small-dog area when it is recorded in the map data.

What to bring

Water and a collapsible bowl, waste bags, and a leash for entry and exit. Leave food and high-value toys at home, since they are the most common trigger for resource guarding in shared space. A well-fitted collar with current tags matters more than any gear.

Note: This is general guidance, not veterinary or behavioural advice. Local rules on leash law, vaccination, permits, and breed restrictions vary by city — check the posted rules at each park.

Frequently asked questions

What should I check before letting my dog off leash?

Walk the perimeter and confirm the fence is intact, gates latch, and there is a double-gate or airlock entry. Recall matters more than fencing in an unfenced park.

Should small dogs use a separate area?

Many parks provide a separate small-dog enclosure. It reduces the risk of predatory drift and rough play injuries, and it is usually the safer choice for dogs under about 25 pounds.

What should I bring to a dog park?

Water and a bowl if the park has no water point, waste bags, and a leash for the entry and exit areas. Leave food, treats, and favourite toys out of shared space to avoid resource guarding.

When are dog parks least crowded?

Weekday mid-mornings and early afternoons are usually quietest. Evenings after work and weekend mornings are the busiest windows in most cities.

Which dogs should skip the dog park?

Puppies without a full vaccination course, dogs in heat, dogs recovering from illness or surgery, and dogs with a bite history or strong resource guarding are better served by private walks or a rented space.
